Seemed like the weekend. Have not seen a concert in ages but saw ZZ Top tonight. Good show, nice to be out and hear live music.

Spent most of a week in a spur range of Oregon's Blue Mountains with plans to fish a nearby lake a couple of days. One approach road was completely closed. The other involves about 14 miles of not very good gravel and 12 miles of bad road. A USFS staffer advised us that the 12-mile stretch has degraded to 3 mph potholes and washboard. The remaining option added about 50 miles to the round trip. Bah! Fishing canceled.

There were consolations, though. The prairie was in bloom, as were the scablands.

It wasn’t a weekend, but I had a pretty decent day on the lower Beaverhead two weeks ago today. Everything else in SW Montana was pretty well blown out, although not as bad as it would get a week later.

Went bassin' in a fair sized shallow lake within an hour of home. Fished the first 3 hrs of light before the real heat set in. Nice ones in there, crappie and bluegill also ran big. Round 2 likely for next weekend..

Went wine tasting in Walla Walla

<record scratch> I'll bet you're wondering how I got here?

Had a great float on the Grande Ronde last weekend. Me and a buddy in my drifter, with others in a raft and inflatable kayak. Water was on the high side, so it was a sporty ride, but beautiful up in the canyon. Salmonflies everywhere, but nobody was looking up, and I got the only fish of the weekend. I'm starting to resign myself to the GR being a river of scenery and side hikes, not fishing.

So anyway, we get to the takeout at Boggan's. Pull the boat, load up. have a last lunch of cheese and salami. Fistbumps and seeya's exchanged, and we're off to a horrible screeching dragging noise. Turns out my axle had shifted, and the tire was now resting firmly on the fender. On a bolt, no less, so a hundred yards down the road it would have gone kablooey. So, drop the trailer and head up the road to get cell service, but no luck on a tow via AAA. Back down, hide the key to the hitch lock, and drive the five hours back to Portland, sans boat.

(insert tedious details of arranging tows and repairs from five hours away)

The wife and I took off Saturday morning to retrieve boat. Get a call halfway across Portland, asking if I was going to need my wallet. Took off again. I had tactically decided to have it towed to Clarkston, instead of Enterprise, knowing that I'd want a drink or two. After picking up the boat at the LS in Clarkston, we headed back to Walla Walla where we had a nice dinner and some great wine. And I had the only drifter in the vineyard.

I spent the weekend chasing bass. My guess is the last time until late fall or next spring. The next time I fish in WA, I’ll be chasing salmon. Probably straight through to mid November. It’s been really fun chasing bass this spring on the fly. It’s a new “target” for me (I have caught a few as bycatch in the past).

Saturday…slow but a couple nice fish caught.

Sunday…slower. One small LMB lost and this little SMB landed.

I spent a couple nights on the Joe with a few AWESOME dudes from our coaching staff…we knew the flows were too high for the fishing to be good but we all needed some time off the grid.View attachment 20320
That’s the best campsite on the river. It gets fished pretty hard all season, but that pool is always good for a couple of fish. It’s a great swimming hole on a hot summer day too!

Me and a buddy went to a hike-in lake with our belly boats. The water was easily 10 feet higher than when I was there last time- all of the shoreline willows were underwater and some were barely visible in the depths.

There is a nice waterfall above the lake and it was really rolling. I didn't get a picture of it.

We caught browns and brookies. The browns were really pretty.

My phone died mid-trip and it didn't work for a couple days. I was bummed because these pics had not transferred to the cloud and I thought I lost them. But, after a couple days in a rice bag it woke up enough to move the pics to the web, and then died for good. Rest in peace.
