Great pictures of a lion's mane jellyfish, Cyanea capillata. It is one of the largest jellyfish known. The nematocysts (stinging cells in the tentacles) do produce a painful sting (even when detached from the bell), but the stings usually are not fatal. However, the lion's mane jellyfish was the true killer in the Sherlock Holmes story "The Adventure of the Lion's Mane" by Arthur Conan Doyle.

I've been seeing them out on Henderson Bay at the family's vacation cabin the last few nights as well! Not huge numbers yet though.
