Kagami (African Pompano) is absolutely my favorite sashimi!
Nice, yeah they're absolutely gorgeous fish.Kagami’s sure are pretty…my buddy Naoki did an ink print for me with one I caught off of Molokai…
I greatly prefer bottom fishing now when I'm in the boat. After one has caught dozens of billfish and countless big ahi, it gets kinda old. I like the hands on approach of light tackle jigging. When I'm not fly fishing, that is.......Fantastic thread! I can catch the much smaller versions of many of those fish from the bank and beach in Maui consistently…. So I’m pivoting to Kona for our next trip!
I will do a sailfish/deep sea trip, but the lighter gear and variety would very much be a goal of mine as well.
Thanks for posting!
I'm not sure if there are any light tackle charters any more, Del Dykes retired and that genre is very underserved here. If you're interested in big game, you should try the Lepika. Captain Nitta is amazing, a fantastic fishing guide.Anybody got recommendations for light tackle charters fishing in Kona?
I'll be there mid February would love to wrangle with some mahi mahi or some other bottom fish
Did you land it?This is what it looks like when a hooked 300+ pound mako goes airborne 275 yards behind the boat!

I’ve caught a lot of different sharks in Hawaii, but never ever saw a mako in the islands…This is what it looks like when a hooked 300+ pound mako goes airborne 275 yards behind the boat!

NOOOO LOL! the last thing we want to deal with is a massive pissed of mako anywhere near our boat. They have been known to jump IN boats when hooked. NOT GOOD! Luckily it bit through the 50 lb bottom fish leader rather quickly.Did you land the Mako?

Hmmm yeah I’m gonna have to sort of disagree with you on this one. Sounds pretty fun to me. Too bad I am a huge wuss when it comes to being offshore and keeping food in my stomach. Thanks for all the inspiration lately, headed back to Kauai in a few weeks and really looking forward to being back at Anini beach.Fighting any shark over 50 pounds on light tackle, which is all we use, is NOT fun at all. The good end is when they quickly chop through the leader and the torture is over quickly. But some are hooked outside their tooth line and take forever to land. They are a giant pain in the ass.
