Got into my first salmon-from-the-kayak today! Was expecting pinks, but found rezzies and a few very nice cutts. The 17" searun gave me a better run on the 7wt than the larger rezzies did! Dang, that was an angry fish.
Four coho to the net, several lost, lots of missed takes.

Had to slack-release one cuttie that was getting repeatedly hammered by a coho while I tried to land it 😧
Posting is sloooow out here, hopefully more fish & pics tomorrow.

After a several year hiatus from beach fishing during the Pink runs I finally made it out to my old beach stomping grounds this morning. After a couple of “WTF?”moments after seeing the crowd on a MONDAY morning I found a spot and got to casting.

Didn’t fish very long but went 1/1 with a small pink that put up a fun fight on the 6wt.

I saw one other fly fisher and he landed a much nicer brighter fish. Lots of folks with gear but I didn’t see any other hookups.

Now this is a sexy set up…. Bauer Rogue 3 on my new Beulah Platinum 9664-4 with a Rio OBS and a pink over white craft fur clouser:

No cracks yet in the Rio line but it’s only been about an hour 🙂

It was good to finally get out again.

That’s awesome, I trouble finding a cuttie right now and here you are getting a show! Did not know the coho smack larger cutts in the salt, seen it on the rivers later in the season as a territorial dispute.

Enjoy the perfect camping weather and sounds like great fishing 👍

Yeah, not sure if it wanted to eat the searun, or wanted the fly to itself!

Piggy backing off @Nick Clayton 's report.

I got my boat fixed up over the last couple weeks with new fish finder and a couple other minor repairs. Added some new mojo to it while I was at it.

Took my buddy out hoping to get him his first ever salmon on a fly rod. He's relatively new to fly fishing and I knew this could be a great intro to salmon fishing in the sound. The coho fishing in the morning was great. I landed around 6 coho and 1 pink at the first spot and missed a bunch more.

Unfortunately the first Coho I hooked messed me up good. It was easily the largest Coho I've hooked this season. Ran under the boat, got the rod tip jammed under the lower unit and changed direction snapping my Redington Link in 2 different spots. IMG_20230821_061403.jpg

Luckily I had a backup on board so we were good for the rest of the day.

Still working with my buddy on his casting so was not able to get him hooked up on Coho in the morning. We made the run out with Nick for Pink and Humpy mania and my buddy and I caught fish until our arms felt like they were going to fall off.

It's been such a killer summer so far on Puget Sound.

Congrats on the first salmon from the kayak! How did the netting go?
Also, please tell me about this craft malt liquor. In my younger days I considered myself a connoisseur of your typical domestic malt liquors and typically consumed them in 40 oz (forty), 32 oz (quart), or 22 oz (deuce deuce) quantities. I no longer partake in such pursuits, but I do quaff the occasional (cough cough) 12 oz. So how’s this Silver City malt? And what’s the ABV?

So today when I had to leave and I had a bucket o line I figured I’d just cast it out to reel it in. It’s laid out that way so makes sense, right? Don’t want to reel up the line that’s on the bottom of the pile; that results in tangles. So I cast it out there and decide to try something.
Reelreelreelreel stop. Reelreelreel stop. Reelreel fish on!

Nice beach morning. We got a couple cutts, a couple fresh pinks and a pretty nice flounder. Haha!

My father-son buddies teaming up on a pink.

This one looked like it got ran over. Haha! I've never seen a pattern like this. Anyone know what might cause that?

This little dude took me into my backing! So funny how 1 pink can just flip & flop and others are screamers.

I broke 2 hooks today on fish. The flounder broke the 1st one when I was trying to do the unhook with him hanging on the hook and the other one broke when my buddy netted my pink. Both Squimps and I'm pretty darn sure I used Gamakatsu SS15 to tie those. I had crimped the barbs on both. Anyone else have trouble with SS15s breaking?
I definitely could have weakened both hitting them on rocks this morning, but weird to break 2 on the landings. On a flouder! Haha!

ya know. I had this same issue on some even bigger hooks I was using as a stringer hook. And they are way thicker wire than the sc15s. Probably just an issue banging on the rocks. Although I have heard of others complain about sc15s breaking.

I quit using SS15's awhile ago due to breakage. Likely from me dinging them on the beach, but they aren't as tough in my opinion compared to other hooks.
I use either Tiemco 811S, Daiichi 2546 or Umpqua U401's now.
I know some folks have had issues with SC15's, but I never have personally. I don't fish with them for salmon though anymore, just searun cutts.

Owner No Escape or Gami Barbless Octopus are good options for barbless stinger hooks.

5 for 7 this morning on the beach. Bonked a solid 4 pound hatchery silver. 4 for 6 with the pink salmon. Pinks were thick this morning, if I put on a smaller fly many more would have been hooked. Nice clean south breeze and cloud cover.

Interesting. Yeah, after today I would have to agree. Good to know. Thanks!

I think it escaped a seal or some other predator twice--slipped out long way once and the other way another time. Wild looking.

It's like something tried to get ahold of it and just couldn't dig in. Something with a big mouth but small or dull teeth... almost like a tarpon tried to mouth it from behind or something (which is obviously NOT what happened here LOL). There's a clear crossing pattern, so maybe something did take two tries from different angles.

Not a gillnet; that would be in front of the dorsal... could tangle net mesh somehow do that?

That is a weird one. Maybe one of the resident bios can fill us in....
