Just love the way you tie Norm, very nice. As this is my favorite fly I play with it a lot. Adding a little orange thread tip behind the body under the tail makes a statistical difference in my catch rate. A guard hair tail tends to fish better than hackle fibers, burnt or orange thread better than brown, which is better than black. Sometimes I rib with yellow floss and tie with a matching silk. I try lots of variations. Worked up a bunch with grouse hackle recently.
I think the fish in one of the rivers I fish don't care for peacock at all. I tried that peacock version and just didn't have a lot of success. That's why eventually most of my birds of prey ended up being black simi seal instead of peacock. I have found a darker thorax does make the hares ear a better fly, and I use a darker shade of hares ear on mine. I like to play with different ties, and then tie on a "standard" version and see how it compares.20231204_095852.jpg
