It is, tough for plants and animals to adapt to chemistry changes fast enough. Seems like the same process that formed bog iron. Warmer, wetter climatic patterns lead to it's formation, especially in a landscape such as that.. I've seen rusty areas along the wetland margins of the streams so I was reading about it and came across this.
