Wet Side of Orygun

I thought to kick off my new membership to this Forum, I would provide an update from a few days of Oregon Coast tidewater fishing I made with my crew (we call ourselves "the geezers") this past fall. The three of us usually take turns hosting trips and buddies Don and Dan enjoy stillwater lakes such as Almanor and Manzanita in California and Pyramid in Nevada. I on the other hand, have drug them to the coast for sea run cutthroat in Northern California and Southern Oregon and now tidewater salmon on the North Oregon Coast.

We staged out of my place near Lincoln City and hit two nearby estuaries. While we were targeting tidewater chinook, there were an awful lot of staging coho around. This past fall, ODFW allowed limited harvest (one per year) of wild fish in a few of the coastal estuaries so we took advantage one day and kept a nice fish. Fly fishing for these tidewater staging coho was quite good and we hooked quite a few, mostly casting and stripping clousers, comets and horner's shrimp patterns. We lost more than we landed but it was a hoot. As a bonus, there were plenty of good sized dungeness on the one day that we set out pots. Overall, the trip was a great success and the wet side of Orygun is awesome!
