New England Tailwater

I recently had to head back east for work and decided to take a few days off to visit family and fish a little tailwater I grew up near and learned to fish on. This river is well known back east but I’m not going to name it. Like many of our fisheries it’s being loved to death. If you really want to know it’d be easy to figure out with the clues I’ve given already :). It’s a solid little trout stream with a mix of rainbows, browns and brookies. Not a destination fishery but a great option for those in the heavily populated NE. Fishing is good for 12-15 inch fish with some big fish thrown in, especially if you concentrate on the trout management areas (catch and release). It’s also a very beautiful, heavily wooded river with few house on its banks and amazing access along most of it.

One of the best thing about the fishing was I got to head out with my dad for the first time in 5-6 years. Between Covid and living three thousand miles apart, we rarely get to do so anymore. Of course he out fished me 3-1 except for one outing where I was able to access a stretch he could not because he did not wear waders. He’s a live bait guy so I’ll use that as an excuse :).

As a youth I always looked forward for our trip into the great north woods. First stop was LL Beans for licenses. Open 24/7 back then, don't know if that's the case now. Pick up some frozen smelt and some minnw rigs and we were off. Oh and some Woodsman fly dope in case we didn't beat black fly time! Myself and friends would buy our cars that we thought would work best for this adventure. About 70 miles in. Many limped back. Anybody do the black pepper in the radiator to make it to civilization? Crazy trip. Amazing bookies! Then my buddy started holding his own with his red and white deceivers against the live bait and the red and white striped/ copper backed daredevils! I still didn't get the message then! If I could turn back time!!

Sorry for the thread drift. That's a beautiful looking river and a nice mix of fish.
The best part was getting out with you dad again. Priceless!

Brook trout are the fish that I first fell in love with. There may be no prettier or eager fish on the planet.

That is a cool report. I doubt that I will ever get back to the northeast to fish. If I ever do, it will most likely be with a 2 or 3 wt and a elk hair caddis.

Indian River, Fabius brook, Trout creek....

I sometimes miss it. Then I remember what black flies are.

Squaretails!!!
Where I am from in the mid Atlantic we call em specked trout. Which we also called these unrelated fish that are cousins to weakfish that live in the tidewater.
Sorry for the drift, thanks for taking us to a cool place!!
