Have you tried soaking the cork? Nothin like a good cork soaker. I prefer just using the kitchen to get my cork soaked. Sink is great. Little dawn, and a scrubby.

If I had found an aged real to match, I would've left it as is. Even though it was slippery as fuck. But the new medalist just looked goofy. It feels so much better. But yeah, I get what you're saying.
If the patina has gotten hard and slick, then I support the cleaning to re-gripify it. It’s a tool to be used IMHO, make it work for you.

Magic Eraser or a Wonder Cloth to clean the cork than a thin coat of U-40 cork sealer to keep the fish slime from soaking in. A coat of furniture wax on the rod shaft once a year and a bit of bees wax on the ferrules keeps everything copacetic.
