At a Basin walk-in lake. Let me know if you want it back…for the Yak. Looks like it came straight from Red’s, like a Canyon starter pack. I guess ya never know if ya don’t try it.
I hiked it back out as part of trash pickup.
I was organizing flies and found this. It was tied and given to me by Preston Singletary (RIP) at Chopaka lake nearly 20 years ago. The callibaetis were coming off pretty decent that trip. Damsels, too. I’ve never been back to that lake, not that I had a bad time. It’s just a haul!
As requested by @Pink Nighty. It’s really just a synthetic woolly bugger, I won’t kid, but it is a combo that has been working.
These are the materials.
Bitey Whitey tying steps
Tie in thread.
Wrap some wire for weight as desired. I like some for sinking but not so much that it kills fly...
This group on the board has a lot of travel experience and knowledge.
We want to plan a big (for us) family trip to Costa Rica this summer. Thinking 10-14 days, and it will be the whole fam damily which will include an 8 and a 6 year old next year. Maybe we will spend half the trip by one coast...
I have become very comfortable fishing a 15‘ type 6 integrated sink tip line on my 9’ 6 weight rods. I like that configuration. Shorter tips don’t do it for me. I know some swear by the 24’ tips, and I’ve never tried them, but I know the 15’ works for me. For a long time I’ve used RIO’s offering...
I got an invite for a private boat trip going out of Westport this Saturday. (YES!) This is a mixed gear trip running bait, iron, swimbaits, and maybe even flies. We will troll too, if that works, but the last trip this skipper ran he said they got all their fish on bait, iron or swimbaits. They...
Are you okay? Just checking.

No it is not that kind of Annual Report, like to shareholders. But I’ve been posting these TRs from past summer trips and so here’s another update. Westlopes be westslopes. They love dry flies, and take them oh. So. Slow. Ly. Set!
Day 1, a Wednesday, I got there and found one campsite...
I had several days of trout fishing recently, and I stuck with the dry all throughout and did well. Had to cover a lot of water to find the “big fish” that wanted to eat, though. It got me thinking that fishing like that, maybe fishing in general, is like gambling. I’m not a gambler, but sure...
My buddy and I decided to take a relaxing day in the mountains wet wading and fishing dry flies. We found plenty of willing rainbows; they were really on the chow.
On the first stream, they really liked a size 14 caddis, twitched.
This lil fella lives here:
Look how fat!

The theme song for my trip could be this:
Climbing up the creek seemed just a little harder than I recall, and threading small hook eyes has become a small challenge. That’s new.
The woods were busy. Crawling with people. It’s always a relief in that case to see your pullout open.
I like how...
I was going to get a transom saver, but now I’m not so sure.
When my motor is in the fully tilted up position, most of the weight is actually centered over the transom, pushing straight down on it.
There’s no way to use a transom saver in this position or anywhere close to it. When the motor...
We also did fun stuff like smoking ribs and chicken, burning shit and blowing shit up, and 4-wheeling the fire/timber roads in my friend’s side-by-side followed by my other friend in his rental Jeep Gladiator pickup. I have to say, we were impressed with what that thing did with stock touring...
I just got back from a trip to see some old friends and family, and there was a decent amount of casual, fun fishing, so I thought I’d share a report.
The first stop was my buddy’s “cabin” that he just built on 70 acres in the oak-pine woods of Northeast Alabama, not too far from the...
I finally caught one of the dang things! I’ve tried maybe three times before and always felt like I am on a fool’s errand. But after scoping this stretch of beach all week, I finally bit the bullet, bought the one day out of state license, got my 8 weight and 300 grain streamer express ready...
