You can knit pick all you want on those mole crabs but an all orange wooly bugger tied to ride hook up (or checkerboard as one guy from SoCal calls it) will clean house. Those look freakin' phenomenal though.
Thanks. I figured anything orange and sparkly would get the job done but couldn't resist taking another stab at a presentable mole crab. All these should ride hook up.

We'll see if they get the job done. We're staying on a very popular beach with zero hard structure. Biggest challenge will likely be not hooking a dog, kid, or inattentive beachcomber on the back cast.

My favorite version of a Pat's rubberlegs in 8 3xl. I think the legs are just stiff enough to give a good vibration and let the fish sense it is there also, especially in turbulent water. Every presentation should be finished by lifting and skating the fly, aided by legs and tail. I lost the best fish yesterday on a viscous hit when my 3X leader parted near the fly, knot or nick I couldn't tell.20220821_125552.jpg

Probably the last flies off the vise before my trip. My biggest tying effort ever by far. Tied way way more than we’ll likely need but I doubt we’ll run out of effective patterns.

This one is on a flat braid covered tube. Bunny is just tied in up front with a chenille ball to stand it up. The rest is pretty obvious. I’m liking the looks and speed that this one tied up with.

A version of Dave Whitlock’s Red Fox Squirrel nymph; just about the only fly my father-in-law used on the Blackfeet Reservation lakes, size 10-12, either unweighted or bead-head. His rarely looked like this - they were chewed up from all the fish he caught. The first time I saw one came after I unhooked a 6lb rainbow of his after it took him on a Nantucket sleigh ride in a float tube; the hackle was gone, the rib was trailing out the back and he had it tied on about 3’ of what was left of his leader (probably about 0x).

Tried partridge, hen pheasant and sharptail at the front and wasn’t happy with any of them; the bleached pheasant rump looks okay, might give natural a shot, too.

Heading to the beach for a few days. Surf fishing will be a good warm up for tuna.

Havent tied in almost a year. Not my best work but these should fish. Mole crabs are a bitch to tie a decent imitation.

Those look pretty darn good to me. I found this patten somewhere on the internet and it has worked well for me. Perhaps a bit more elaborate than is necessary but fun to tie.
