What have you done for your boat lately?

Old riveted aluminum boats leak a bit. My new old riveted 16.5’ Sea Nymph returned from its latest trip leaking a bit as usual, but I found the amount unreasonable. Carp fishing you’re going in harms way, and over here the shallows are rocky. Yeah, I got a bilge pump, but this is just too much water. So, back on the ol’diagnose and repair train. Diagnosis: level boat on driveway, install plug, put 50 or 60 gallons of water in the boat, see if and where it comes out.
Aha! Big time leak at the base of the stem fitting where it joins the keel panel. Empty water from boat. Youtube recommended fix? G Flex 650 epoxy and heat. Follow instructions, place epoxy in seam and some other suspicious gaps. Cure. Today, re-hydrate the boat: now, no leaks out! Yay! I’ll be covering the cured epoxy with a coat or two of clear flex seal. I’m hoping this significantly reduces the water coming into the boat.

You had me at "carp fishing you're going in harm's way"

Just sent the ECU from my 9.9 Tohatsu to Outboard EFI to have it flashed to 20 hp, and ordered a 9.25 x 10 prop to match the change. Tohatsu uses the exact same engine for their 9.9/15/20, reducing HP via tuning and air restrictors, so a flash tune and restrictor removal = 20 hp.

I have a Honda 8hp long shaft from a sailboat, that also fits on my Ray’s McKenzie db. It’s the same engine as the 9.9, just tuned differently. It likely needs a tuneup but I also asked if it could be converted to a 9.9. Answer was no. Doesn’t seem impossible or exorbitant to me. What say the group mind?
It was a little slow the only time I tried it on the db. I suppose I could sell it along with the sailboat (pending I think) and then buy a newer 9.9. I believe it was new in 98 or so.

Speed from an outboard comes down to obtained RPM, which is highly prop dependent.
If the prop on your Honda 8 is a four blade it's a thrust prop designed with 'bite' pitch, designed for max push at lower RPM, the design limiting max possible RPM due to resistance.
If it is a four blade, a change to a three blade such as a 9 1/4 x 8 that has milder pitch should allow the motor to reach higher RPM's.
Your prop will have some numbers on it indicating diameter and pitch. Give The Prop Shop in Mukilteo a call and they will inform you of your options.

Thanks Pal, great idea.
Think it’s a three, but will take a closer look when I can. May also ask them about a tuneup. Think I was quoted (sight unseen) $600 to $800 depending on parts. Maybe that’s not high but a second opinion would help. It’s low hours but hasn’t been run in 17 years, so it’s probably due.

Just looked at their website- don’t think they do tuneups, but they might have a recommendation.

that's way too high. New plugs, water pump impeller, thermostat, lower gear oil and motor oil/filter is under a $100 in parts, just replaced those on my Tohatsu last week. Suggest calling a couple of independent OB mechanics and ask for a quote.

very cool...so a ketch, not a yawl?
Ketch rigged.

Added: My reason for pulling the engine turns out to be the failure of an inaccessible $2 banjo washer that seals the crankcase sump drain hose.

So, after replacing the $2 washer, I'll probably be out about 750-$1k for the other parts I'll replace (motor mounts, damper plate, engine clean up/painting) and some outside labor. My labor has no value of course.

Typical for boats - replacement of a $2 part leads to an additional $998± in costs.

husky beam of North Seas breeding...what a cool boat to go exploring with

I got a lightly used Hobie Compass and began outfitting it. Installed a garmin stryker 4 fish finder, jerry rigged the transducer to its Lowrance mount and routed the wirings and battery to the inside.

Bought on Etsy a 3d printed mount for the fish finder and installed map pockets on the sides. Made the drive leash from net lanyard.

A handle was added for something to grip on to load and unload. At 68lb it’s pretty manageable by myself. Also glued on keel guard.

In terms of safety, I made a light/flag pole out of pvc tubing. Bought a orange NRS Raku pfd, bet I’m the brightest thing there is out there:)
