Show Us Your Humpies !!!

Not gang buster today in the Thunderdome, but found enough players to keep things interesting.

Yesterday North of Shipwreck up to Mukilteo, I saw the largest mass jumpy humpy party I’ve ever witnessed. It is likely that all 8 million predicted pinks were there.

On a side note, look at the last picture… if you know you know!

Haha how many pink salmon burgers were eaten last night?

Second batch this run but I really like them! Better than tuna burgers. The fam agrees.

I don’t measure anything but here’s what I did:

Minced fresh ginger, shallot and garlic, into a big container. Add finely chopped fresh parsley, scallions and and basil. A good blob of mayo. Dash each of fish sauce and colatura and some salt and pepper. Drizzle of olive oil. Mix this up. Add in Chopped skinless fresh pink salmon. Mix it all up well. Use an immersion blender to make about a fifth of it pasty. (Or a food processor if you like) This is your binding agent, very important. Stir well and patty it out and cook on a smoking hot oiled flat surface.

I was too tired and we all felt too lazy to go out again yesterday after my morning session with Phil, so we, me and the kids, all agreed we’d go today, late morning. I figured the upriver launch would be a zoo and no parking so opted for the “fancy” but wave-stricken launch on the bay. I was worried fishing was going to be tough, and it wasn’t gangbusters, with nothing happening down in the humperdome except a whole lotta boats stacked at the bridge, but we managed to CnR 3 pinks in the bay as a team on jigs. That includes the jig I found at the launch the other day. I cut off the silly added treble of course, and added a couple strands of missing flashabou to one side, because I am like that. And then we did run and gun looking for jumpers or finners that were not solo fish. They did some pretty good casting but mostly I’d cruise, all of us looking, then run over alongside the fish and cast into them. Twitch twitch, hook up and hand the rod off.

Some common dolphins came in pretty close which we all enjoyed, as well as watching three osprey hunt simultaneously, several unsuccessful dives, and seeing one fly over us with a salmon in its talons.

Stopped for fried chicken on the way home and I feel pretty successful even if I never cast a fly today.

Fish #1 was really strong. It was a team effort to reel it in and net it.

Kid 1 reeled the 2nd one in on his own.
Kid 2 gave reeling ‘em in another shot on fish 3 and made progress.

Well done Matt!

There is no better way to introduce youngsters and newbies to salmon fishing. Unlike say fishing for Chinook a lost fish is no big deal; there likely will be another chance soon. For the fly angler making progress up the fishing ladder hooking and playing pinks is wonderful practice is dealing with fish larger than provided at a local with stocker trout or panfish.

Humpies were made for kids and those of us are still kids at heart!

Haha I like that lean back with the heavy net 🤣

Haha! Thanks. 9 times is about 8 more than usual. 😁
I'm usually a right-handed netter, but I screwed up the ergonomic plan last night big-time. I had the GoPro on the right side...experimenting with it attached to the Scotty mount. And the darn cooler ended up leaning to the right as well. Yes, the old 36qt Igloo fits back there! You gotta put em on ice right away! :ROFLMAO:
Right hand reel? 🤣
