Satellite Cell Service

RCF

Legend
Satellite cell service is coming err is almost here. Earlier this summer AST SpaceMobile and AT&T launched an endeavor to deploy a number of satellites into low orbit that would cover all the US ---> think StarLink for internet but only for 5G cell service. It has been in the works for a number of years. Apple, AT&T and Verizon are all apart of this effort. The satellites were launched in August.

Satellite cell texting service provided currently by Apple's later versions of iPhone is providing a great service for those cutoff from the outside world due to Hurricane Helene:

As this service rollouts out, it will help many of us stay in contact with our familites when we get off the beaten path when hiking, hunting and fishing. Maybe even those that are fishing way offshore too.

Ahh It's all just a crapshoot these days regardless. Never know!! Only thing you can do is rig up. RIG UP!! when I RIG UP I'm rigging up for a multitude of scenarios.

That's cause you never know!! Gotta RIG UP for a multitude of scenarios.

There are still advantages to the InReach devices. Easier tracking for loved ones. Quicker and more constant satellite acquisition. etc
I don't head into the sticks without my Garmin inReach Explorer SE+. The on-board map is also very useful, as is the waypoint function.

Yesterday, on a fishing trip with Ive at a pretty remote mtn lake I managed to lock my keys in my truck at the end of the day...after he left for home.

The woods grew dark and I could hear the wolves howl, bears growl, and the distant sounds of NE Washington's hillbilly scroggins tuning up their banjos...as the batteries faltered in my ancient Ray-O-Vac flashlight.

In reality it was a nice sunny late afternoon, I was heavily armed...and had at my disposal several lights should I be walking for help.

Fortunately I always take a spare key on a lanyard (hung around my neck like a latchkey kid) that accompanies my InReach.

Without the key (or the InReach) it would have been a very long walk to any sort of cellphone coverage...or a long wait for my wife (likely somewhat irritated to have to travel an old logging road in her nice sedan) to arrive with a spare key.

Starlink will be adding cell phone connection in the near future:

Will be interesting to see how this new technology all plays out. Features and coverage, etc. AST SpaceMobile has AT&T, Apple and Verizon involved. StarLink has Elon.

I believe T-Mobile is partnered with Starlink on the satellite texting front. So all carriers will likely have some form of it in the future.

In 1986 my dad gave me $5.
He said to get a key and a magnet hide a key box.
He also said he would never come help me if I lock my keys in my car.

Lesson learned on day 1.

There's not much metal on vehicles these days to attach one of those old magnetic key boxes!

Better way to do it is to take some duct tape and hide the key by wrapping the tape around it and some part of your car's underside (that does not get hot). Then the tape will get all dirty and grungy and look like nothing. Looking for a hide-a-key box is a pretty standard tool in the car theft toolbox, I suspect.

$500 to you if you can locate my hide-a-key within 2 hours of searching with a flashlight with my car on a lift.

HA! fair enough, friend.

But I suspect the average person isn't nearly as good at hiding it.

I must take back my challenge, I'm sure in a few minutes you would find my hide a key.

Your up in BC on a fishing trip, you wake up and look outside. Snow! So you started your truck up to melt the snow off it before heading to the lake. Inadvertently you hit the lock button as you back out the cab, swing the door closed and say to yourself: "SH--!" as you realize you just locked your truck with the engine running. So....... under your truck, in the snow and slush and truck exhaust fumes and look for your "betch $500 you can't find my hide a key". Can you find it? ;-)

I used to lock my keys in my car so often that I got really good with a coat hanger! But it's a lot harder to pop the latch with a coat hanger on newer cars.

In regards to getting locked out, this is the best thing Ford ever added to some of their vehicles. 😂
