Great day fishing gone wrong

Jim Allen

Steelhead
Floated the Farmlands section of the Yakima River yesterday in my 9ft Watermaster pontoon. I have floated this section of the river hundreds of times in all conditions in my driftboat, but choose to get the old pontoon out for the day.
It was a beautiful day on the river and fishing was good. I was enjoying my day until.....I under estimated the force of the flow in a pinch point with a branch/log projecting out about 20ft and about 3ft above the river.
The branch was blocking all but about a 10ft section of river. Within seconds I was in trouble. I was quickly pinned up against the bank with the front of the pontoon under the large branch. The flow was trying to swamp my pontoon. I very quickly bailed off the pontoon and scrambled onto the bank. After the panic settled. I was able to shimmy out on the branch and recover my equipment and rods.
I then herd a voice yelling "are you ok?". It was a lone fisherman in a driftboat who stopped to help. In short I shimmied back onto the log and was as able to use my legs to push my pontoon under the log. As the pontoon popped free under the log I was able to rope the pontoon so this individual could secure it on the opposite bank. Then this individual rowed his driftboat into a small opening just down stream from me, secured his boat and came to assist me with my gear and get me out of this very dangerous situation.
I was so very lucky my stupidity didn't cost me so much more possibly my life. In hind sight I could have so easly got off my pontoon and walked it safely past the danger as this is what I would have done if I was in my driftboat.
This individuals name was Mr. Will Beggs. He is very new to the area (15 days). He told me that he has been a guide for 10 years. He was learning the river. Mr. Beggs actions were a direct reflection of his character. I have no idea what I would have done if Mr. Beggs had not been there. I have to give him a shout out. So if your looking for a guide with exceptional character on the Yakima River here is Mr. Beggs contact information:

Thank you Will I am indebted.

I grew up fishing a floating the Rogue River and I have seen my short life pass before my eyes as I have been wiped off my float from a swiper, then bounce off the river bottom.
Glad to read you survived and saved your gear too!!!!

Even the best of us, including Jim Allen, find out just how powerful water is. When things go bad on the water, they can go really bad very quickly. Glad all turned out well. Great to see others like Will Beggs pitching in to help when the need is there...

Jim, so glad it ended well and you're in good company. MLK Day '05 changed a lot for me with respect to water. In short, Whatcom SWR team got two of us out of a bad situation on the Nooksack, where I didn't plan on walking away. I learned a lot from it and look for any opportunity to pay it forward.

My one word plug: PFD

Thank you for posting a great reminder. I was planning on floating that section next week in my pontoon. Maybe the Canyon instead.

Glad to hear you’re ok. That’s one of my biggest fears on rivers.

There being a new guide is really gonna piss Leaf off. Worth it, though, as he sounds like a good guy.

A good guide looking out for and helping others is a great way to start out. Now he needs to get to know each fish by name...

I've been saying it a lot lately but I recommend taking a serious look at the Bohupowah line. Bohupowah is a big brand these days!

Possible on the Yak.

Oh, that fish by the rock next to the tree at MP 18? That’s Gerald. If you don’t get him today we’ll swing by tomorrow and get him then.

Thanks for all the kind words. Love what SurfnFish stated "we are all brothers and sisters on the river". Compassion for our fellow humans is what this world needs more of these days.

Tim L. & Dirty Dog; I hear you and i am thankful you are both here to tell your story.

And yes wear that PFD.

Yikes!

It’s stories like this from experienced drift boaters that gives me serious pause about rushing out to drift the Yakima in my 12’ Koffler pram….

Thank you for sharing and the safety reminders for us all.

Very glad you’re safe!
