Non-Fly Columbia fall coho

Been fun since the Columbia reopened on October 1st.

I've been hitting my favorite little local spot from my boat and casting wigglers mostly. I have busted out the fly rod a few times like I do every year, but they never, ever, even give it a look.

Been out daily but going to take a break this week, take a friend out next weekend, then trade my Grundens for my Sitka camo for my next adventures 😂 between my chinook season, then all my ocean trips (halibut, lings, sablefish, albacore, salmon) I'm very well stocked on fish meat.

Are those rattle jigs producing anything?
Producing bagels and goose eggs. Going to go in with a heavier sink so I can do a different retrieve without it pulling too far up. But they just haven't been interested.

May make a fly only trip this week sometime just to mess around some more. Not like I need the meat.

How is the livescope treating you?
Oh it's fun, but way more useful during trolling than this particular thing I'm doing now. I'd say it's helped me catch zero fish, but it's definitely taught me a lot about their behavior which has been very interesting and fun. Plus, it's saved me from getting snagged on logs many times, which probably has paid for itself already!

Also on that note - I've been assisting one of the big conservation orgs by using footage to show where salmon are staging in an area that SHOULD be a commercial fishing sanctuary, but got left out of the regs due to a technicality. ODFW claims salmon don't go there, but using my Livescope, I was able to show them that they do, in fact, congregate there. So now they hopefully get to rewrite the regs to be consistent with every other sanctuary area.

Amazing use of technology, bro 🙌🏻

I had a solid few weeks tossing gear and trolling for the 'hos in my Kayak, but the water levels seemed to have jacked up Friday and the fish where I'm at seem to have finally pushed upriver. I trolled one up Saturday but it was slooooow. Time for me to start looking for them with the fly rod.

is your camera on some kind of gimbal that auto-tracks?

Nope, it's a 360 camera with lenses on both sides, then when you edit the video using the phone app you just turn the phone to track where you want. That was my first video and first attempt at editing so I'd say the technology has made it pretty easy, because it all seems like magic to me.

Yeah I dig that.

I'm gonna head to my spot one more time tomorrow then probably call it a season. You should come out for one last party.

That is a significant hang back length.
What hooks are those?
Think that one's an Owner Octopus. I run them on a long bead chain. Otherwise, like all things coho, they seem to miss the hook. You want it to hang back behind the tail at least or you'll likely not hook em. They come standard with trebles on the middle and rear, but they're super small and also don't hold well.

Sometimes they get REALLY stuck like this one yesterday. But does go to show how shallow they nip at things. Just about every one I land is hooked right at the tip of the mouth/nose. Rarely as deep as the corner of the mouth. They always seem to want to nip at something's tail vs fully biting the whole thing.
